Membership Activities: To build a strong membership of friends and residents of Manoa Valley working toward common goals.  Our current membership stands at 3750 and counting.  Click here if you want to join now.

Program Activities: To develop and host various community activities which will promote and strengthen the feeling of neighborhood in Manoa. Among community events held in the past and planned on a periodic future basis are:  Kupuna Suppers,  Manoa Walking Tours and Historic Home Tours, Historic Preservation Week events, Malama Aina Manoa, community workshops, and many more.

Development:  To seek and raise funds through grant awarding organizations, gift solicitations, and other fund-raising activities.

Educational Endowment Fund:   To fund various projects for educational purposes proposed by the general membership or the Boad of Directors consistent with the stated mission of Malama o Manoa. Check out our separate page on this annual grant opportunity.

Manoa Stream Projects: To restore a  pathway  along Manoa Stream for all to enjoy, based on the Manoa Stream Conceptual Plan prepared by the University of Hawaii in 1976. Also, to monitor and improve the Manoa Stream water quality and to participate in the City & County Adopt-a-Stream stream cleaning program.  For more, see our separate page on Manoa Stream activities.

Thousand Tree Giveaway: One of our newer activities is the "1000 Tree Giveaway" event, where members cultivate and propagate many different species of trees and give them away to the public. Following on the precedent set in September, 2004 of the well received and successful first Tree Giveaway project, the group is again propagating 1000 or more beautiful trees which will be given away on Sunday, April 20th, 2008 at the Manoa Recreation Center Pavilion.   Learn more about it here.

Historic Preservation:  To identify and create a record of historic homes in Manoa, and to encourage and facilitate placement of old Manoa homes on the State Historic Register.   For more on this see our separate page on historic home designation.

Historic Homes Walking Tours:  One of the most popular of Malama's recurring activities. Generally conducted once every two years, this is a self-guided walking tour of Manoa Valley historic homes and neighborhoods.

Kupuna Supper:  Long-time residents of our valley are honored every other year at Malama o Manoa's biennial Na Kupuna Supper. The celebration dinner is usually held at a major restaurant and honors Manoa Valley's kupuna - those 65 years of age and older who have resided in Manoa for over 50 years.

Visualization:  To develop a community-based long range planning concept for Manoa Valley, in order to inform government decision-makers how the community views its own future. To monitor and evaluate government-initiated planning proposals. See our separate page on Visioning here.

Design Guidelines:  To develop architectural guidelines for new buildings and renovations; design standards for streetscapes and landscaping; and to explore the possibility of designating parts of Manoa as a Thematic Design District under the City & County of Honolulu's zoning regulations in order to maintain the unique historic and scenic character of the neighborhood. Recognition Awards:  A new recurring program for recognizing and celebrating Manoa homes which typify many of the cherished characteristics and features which make our Manoa Valley special. These annual  Recognition Awards are meant to  identify and reward architectural and other property-related “gifts” to the Manoa community.
