Purposes of the Program

The Malama o Manoa Educational Endowment Fund Grant Program was created to support projects for educational purposes consistent with the mission of Malama o Manoa. These purposes are:
 

• To preserve, protect, and enhance the special qualities of our Manoa community;
  
  
• To preserve and encourage the preservation of historic buildings, objects, sites, and traditions relating to the history of Manoa Valley, Oahu, State of Hawaii
  
  
• To educate and involve the general citizenry of Hawaii, and especially those of the Manoa area, in the historical, cultural, visual, economic, and architectural heritage of Manoa Valley; and through these efforts;
  
  
• To keep alive and intact, for the enrichment of present and future generations, the uniqueness of Manoa and its important historic role in the development of the City of Honolulu and its cultural impact on what is now the State of Hawaii.

Procedures and Requirements of the Program

1 . The amount available for the annual grant will be publicized at Malama Board meetings and in the fourth and first quarter Malama o Manoa newsletters along with a description of the grant application process.

2. Applicants for funding may request the total amount or a portion of it but may not request more than the annual maximum amount.

3. Anyone may apply for an Educational Endowment Fund Grant, including Malama members, members of the Board of Malama o Manoa and other groups and individuals. Individuals, groups or projects may apply repeatedly, whether or not they have previously received funding.

4. Grant applications will be due to the Educational Endowment Fund Grants Committee of Malama o Manoa by March 1st.

5. When applying for an Educational Endowment Fund Grant, the applicant will submit the Malama o Manoa Educational Endowment Fund Grant application either manually or electronically. Applicants must also sign an agreement, stipulating that the funding will be used for the purposes described in the application and that the money must be returned if the project is not undertaken within two years.

6. The Board will consider the recommendations of the Educational Endowment Fund Grants Committee and announce the grant recipients by the middle of May. Funds will be available immediately and will be disbursed by the Treasurer of Malama o Manoa with assistance from the chairman of the Educational Endowment Fund Grants Committee.

7. If a project is selected to receive funding, the grantee or a representative will be responsible for the following reports:

• A brief verbal description of the project for attendees at the annual meeting of Malama o Manoa, which is traditionally held on the second Wednesday of October.
• A brief written project summary or completion report for the Board to be submitted by the grantee by May 15th of the year after the grant was awarded. This narrative report will briefly summarize the project's results or findings, the audiences who were reached, and an accounting of how the money was spent.
• To be submitted only if a project has not been completed within one year of receiving funding, a written explanation and a new expected completion schedule. This would be given to the Board and would be due on May 15th of the year after the grant was awarded.

Process for Choosing Educational Endowment Fund Grantees

The proposals to be funded will be decided by the Board of Malama o Manoa at its April meeting after hearing the recommendations of the Educational Endowment Fund Grants Committee as to the merits of the proposals. Also, the Board, in accordance with its fiduciary responsibilities, shall set the amount of funding offered to each project after hearing the recommendations of the Educational Endowment Fund Grants committee.

If none of the proposals meets the purposes of the Educational Endowment Fund, the Board has the discretion not to release funds that year.

The grant recipients will be notified in mid May.
